Zion Park District Recipient of OSLAD Grant

Newsroom

BREAKING NEWS! We are excited to share that the Zion Park District has been named as a recipient of an Open Space Land Acquisition and Development (OSLAD) Grant in the amount of $600,000 to be used for improvements at David Park. “Governor JB Pritzker along with state and local leaders and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (DNR) announced nearly $60 million in state grants are being awarded for 118 local park projects throughout Illinois to help communities acquire land and develop recreational opportunities.”

The David Park master plan includes an inclusive playground, a new skate park, new basketball courts and soccer fields, plus a full walking loop. We expect this project to begin in the spring of 2024. A timeline for the project will be released when available. The $600,000 grant received is the maximum amount awarded by OSLAD and requires the Park District to match the grant amount received.

The Zion Park District is proud to have secured OSLAD funding the past two years, bringing in one million dollars of state funding to the Zion community.  By consistently seeking external revenue sources, the Zion Park District continues to be a responsible steward of taxpayer funds to manage and maintain parks, facilities, and open spaces for the enjoyment of Zion residents.

Gypsy Moth Spray by Helicopter

Newsroom

The Illinois Department of Agriculture and the Zion Park District have found infestations of Gypsy Moths throughout Shiloh Park. The Gypsy Moth is an insect that in caterpillar stage can do tremendous damage to oak trees by feeding on their leaves. If uncontrolled, they can destroy all the oaks in the park. It has been determined that an aerial spray by helicopter will help control the Gypsy Moth. Spraying will take place between April 25, 2023 and July 1, 2023 depending on weather conditions.

Fourth of July Festival and Fireworks Cancelled for 2021

Newsroom

The Zion Park District board and administration has made the difficult decision to cancel the 4th of July festival and fireworks due to current COVID-19 guidelines and event planning necessities, which requires a number of contracted services and permits to be secured months in advance.

However, we are hopeful to have a fireworks show later this summer that would give all of us an opportunity to come together safely.
We will have much to celebrate!

Hosah Park

Posted 07/14/20 by goflolv and filed under:
Newsroom

Hosah Park is a secluded, small ecological sanctuary located at the southern tip of Illinois State Beach Park

Hosah Park is open for walking, bird watching, enjoying the flora and fauna and the cooling lake breeze. Even though it borders Lake Michigan, Hosah Park is not a swimming beach, the water is not tested by the Lake County Health Department for safe swimming conditions. The waters of Lake Michigan have many risks due to rip currents, unstable sand bottom with drop offs that are not measured and fluctuate with the movement of the lake level, sand flow and current.  We ask that you kindly obey the no swimming signage at Hosah Park and enjoy spending time in nature.

Should you have any questions, please email info@zionparkdistrict.org.

Zion Park District receives 35 acres of donated land dedicated to open space

You may notice a new sign for the Zion Park District on Lewis Ave near the corner of Champart St. This is the newest addition to the park land that the District holds and cares for. Thank you to the DeVito family who have generously donated 35 acres at the southwest corner of Rte. 173 and Lewis Ave. Mr. DeVito is a local businessman, owner of Dynacoil, just down the road. This property has a history of development ideas but now has new life as a conservancy for open space for the community of Zion. The name you will see on the new sign, “Kellogg Creek Conservancy”, identifies that it will be held as green open space in perpetuity for the community. The addition of limited site amenities is on a long range capital list as the District has spent the last year creating a strategic plan. We will be keeping this beautiful area in the plans to create access in the long term. The Zion Park District would like to extend a big ‘thank you’ to the DeVito family for sharing this piece of land with the community of Zion.
